Subject: National Media Campaign to Prevent Underage Drinking

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

On May 11, 2001, Senators Harry Reid of Nevada and John Warner of Virginia introduced S. 866, a bill to establish a "National Media Campaign to Prevent Underage Drinking."

We support this bill and urge you to add your name as a co-sponsor on S. 866 for the following reasons:

* Alcohol is a factor in the three leading causes of death among underage persons in the United States (accidents, homicides, suicides). Alcohol kills six times as many young people as all illicit drugs combined.

* Underage drinking contributes to increased motor vehicle accidents, crime, violence, unprotected sex, teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, depression, and illegal drug use.

* Underage drinking costs U.S. society almost $53 billion each year.

* According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking after age 21.

At present, there is no effective, comprehensive media prevention message to educate about the dangers of underage drinking. Please co-sponsor the National Media Campaign to Prevent Underage Drinking.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:
