Subject: National Media Campaign to Underage Drinking
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
On April 4, 2001, Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA) and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) introduced H.R. 1509, a bill to establish a "National Media Campaign to Prevent Underage Drinking."
We support this bill and urge you to add your name as a co-sponsor of this bill for the following reasons:
* Alcohol is the #1 youth drug problem in the United States and a factor in the three leading causes of death among underage persons.
* Underage drinking contributes to increased motor vehicle accidents, crime, violence, unprotected sex, teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, depression, and illegal drug use.
* According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking after age 21.
* Underage drinking costs U.S. society almost $53 billion each year.
* If the cost of underage drinking were shared equally by each congressional district, the amount would total more than $122 million per district.
At present, there is no effective, comprehensive media prevention message to educate about the dangers of underage drinking. Please co-sponsor the National Media Campaign to Prevent Underage Drinking.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Sincerely,
|
