Idaho Residents: Urge Senator Crapo to Improve Food in Schools
Please urge Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) to cosponsor the bipartisan Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act, S. 771. This bill would help get schools to stop selling junk food to kids. It would do this by calling on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to bring its nutrition standards for foods sold out of vending machines, school stores, and a la carte in line with current nutrition science. It would also apply those nutrition standards to all foods sold on campus throughout the school day.
Senator Crapo needs to hear from his constituents that Idahoans want soda and junk food out of schools. Please contact Senator Crapo and ask him to cosponsor this school nutrition bill. We encourage you to personalize or adapt the model letter below. Thank you in advance for your help.

Subject: Cosponsor S.771, the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
Attn: Katie Downs
As an Idaho resident, and your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor S.771, the bipartisan Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act.
The bill requires the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to bring its nutrition standards for foods sold out of vending machines, school stores, and a la carte in line with current nutrition science. Developed in the 1970s, those standards do not address important nutritional concerns like calories, saturated and trans fat, and salt.
Despite the increase in childhood obesity rates, many of our nation's schools still sell low-nutrition foods and sugary drinks to children. This bill sets an important baseline standard for food sold in schools (outside of the federal school meal program), but Idaho schools would still be able to go beyond this minimum to set stronger standards. The federal government already commits $10 billion to healthy school lunches and school breakfasts. Congress should support this investment by setting a base standard to ensure that schools offer nutritious foods throughout their campuses. As you know, good nutrition is central to children's health and ability to learn.
I look forward to hearing whether you will support the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act.
Sincerely,
|
