H.R. 875: Listen to Common Sense, not Nonsense!
H.R. 875 Will:
Improve FDA’s Ability to Protect You and Your Family from Foodborne Illness by:
-
Increasing inspections of food-processing plants and basing inspection frequency on the risk of the product being produced
-
Mandating that imported foods meet the same safety standards as food produced in the U.S.
-
Directing farms—except those that sell directly to consumers or at farmers markets— to have preventive food-safety plans and requiring FDA to develop safety standards for fresh produce, which has been linked to countless foodborne-illnesses
-
Dividing the FDA into two new agencies – one devoted to drugs and medical devices and the other (a “Food Safety Administration”) focused only on food safety and nutrition and woefully neglected under the existing structure
-
Providing the government with mandatory recall authority and the power to fine manufacturers that produce unsafe food
-
The bill has 41 cosponsors and has been endorsed by major food-safety and consumer-safety organizations
H.R. 875 WILL NOT:
-
Establish a mandatory animal identification system
-
Regulate backyard gardens, farmers’ markets, or direct-marketing arrangements
-
Outlaw organic farming
-
Benefit manufacturers of genetically engineered seeds.
